LAERSKOOL HANDHAAF

About

We are situated in a small town in the Eastern Cape, called Uitenhage.

For years we have been the driving force of entertaining rugby and

development of our schools and districts rugby. We have had

numerous Eastern Province players over the years and players that have

played rugby professionally. Handhaaf has also brought up a few Junior Springboks: Aidon Davis and Malcolm Jaer both playing for the Toyota Cheetahs at present.

Primary School Rugby caught up with William Travill first team coach for Handhaaf U13A  who has been the first team coach for 4 years.

Teams & Coaches

We have chosen a squad of 35 players in September and are busy with conditioning and skills to prepare us for 2019. We will have a very young team in 2019 but we are looking forward to the challenges.

Culture

We are well known for a very expansive game dominated by big running forwards. We value skills and development highly and enforce a culture we like to call DIE HANDHAAFMANIER. Our kids are taught these values therefore we don’t shy away from any of the so called “big names” that we play on a yearly basis. Using these values, we believe that we can participate with the best and never ever stop playing until the final whistle blows.

Tournaments

We are excited to announce that we will host our very first 7’s tournament on the 2nd of March in 2019. We play various warm-up tournaments: Hoërskool Framesby Rugbydag, Lorraine Sportfees and a tournament in Kirkwood, to prepare ourselves for the big tour to Grey College (Bloemfontein) to participate in their Super Series. We also tour Cape Town every year in term 3 and play in the Park 7’s tournament.

Results for 2018

We played 23 games ; won 15 ; lost 6 and drew 2

Biggest Opponent for 2019

What is your current Pre-season practices program

On a Mondays we do conditioning in our Gym and various body-weight exercises as well as speed and footwork. On Tuesdays we focus solely on handling drills and execution and on a Wednesday, we do position specific skill drills.

We will have to say that our biggest challenge will be our first participation in the Grey College Super Series Tournament. We know that only prestigious rugby schools participate in this tournament. Our league Derby will be against Jeffreys Bay that will also form part of our 95-year reunion festival. We also play against great rugby schools each Saturday in a Sport day.

2019

If ever there is a team who can be associated to a terrier it is Handhaaf Primary. Once they have found your weakness they never let you go. They will come at you non-stop and their big forwards will climb in and drive you back. They also have the backs to create space and they have speed to bend a corner. Although they are a young team this year they will never lack heart and if pushed against a wall they will force themselves away from it. No game is easy against them.

We expect them to end up mid table this year in our rankings but big contender for 2020. The fact that they want to play big rugby schools is a feather in their cap to develop their players and give them the skillsets to play under pressure.

Well done to William and Handhaaf!!!
